Love or Church Planting?

We are not commanded to plant churches, but to “obey.” The early church acted in obedience to the great commission - they were motivated by love for Jesus and empowered by the Holy Spirit. They did not respond to a command to “plant churches.” It was love that resulted in obedience to Jesus that propelled them into nations, and planting churches became a normal activity. Just as Jesus “came to seek and save the lost” – so the early church did the same.

The Church Plant became the “fold” into which the “lost sheep” were bought, the place where two or three were gathered together, and where they were taught “to observe all things.”

When planting churches becomes the motivation - when it becomes the goal – passion can dim. When passion for Jesus and His heart for people propels us, church planting is a result.

So the great commission, which results in church planting, takes place under the authority of Jesus who said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”

It is propelled by love for Him resulting in obedience to “Go” into our nations and beyond.

And when there, to “make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you,” in and through the small groups that are planted and, multiply to “Go” and repeat the process.

Because He will be with us “to the end of the age.” And church planting will end in the marriage supper of the Lamb, rejoicing with those to whom we were commanded to “Go.”

What greater motivation, what greater eternal reward … go, go, go, and take the kingdom – for the King is coming!
