When you print ink-heavy documents, such as photos or drawings, you want them to look perfect the first time so you don't need to print them again. If the ink on your printed pages keeps smearing, you can prevent it by adjusting your printer's settings or choosing the right paper for the job.

Paper Type
Don't use regular white printer paper when you print pictures or other images. Instead, use a thick, high-quality photo paper to prevent ink smears and smudging. Some brands of photo paper, such as those labeled "Instant Dry," are designed to dry faster than others. Other brands of paper have a smudge-resistant coating. Photo paper withstands heavy coats of ink. If you only need to print text with no graphics, regular printer paper works fine. Paper that's too thick, such as card stock, might come in contact with the printer's ink cartridge. This can cause smearing and may even damage the cartridge. Check your printer's user guide to determine what paper types work best with the machine.

Printer Settings and Tests
Most printers allow you to change the settings to match the type of paper you're using and the content you want to print. This is useful for reducing smears and other problems. Open your printer's options or settings menu and look for an option such as "Paper Type" or "Print Settings." Select the paper size or type. If you're printing an image, select the "Picture" or "Photo" option. Your printer may have a self-test option. When you run the test, the printer prints a test page and alerts you if any problems are found. Try this if your printouts keep smearing and you can't determine why.

Ink Cartridge
If you've recently installed new ink cartridges, you should align them to prevent smearing and other print problems. Look for this option in the printer's maintenance settings. Horizontal smears indicate a buildup of fibers beneath the ink cartridges. If you suspect this, remove the cartridges and clean them. This process differs depending on your printer's model. Refer to the printer's user guide for instructions on removing the cartridges. In general, after you remove a cartridge, use a moist cotton swab to clean ink that's smeared around the nozzle plate. Don't touch the nozzle plate itself. In addition, clean the ink carriage inside the printer.

Other Tips
Depending on the type of paper you use, ink may take just a few seconds or several minutes to dry. If you're printing several pages at a time, remove each page from the printer tray as it's printed. When picking up a printed page, hold it by the edges and don't touch the ink. Avoid stacking printed pages together, as doing so may cause ink to smear. Refilling your ink cartridges might cause smearing. For best results, purchase new cartridges instead of refilling the ink yourself. If the printer is tilted or sitting at an angle, the ink may smear. Place the printer on a flat, stable surface, such as a desk or table.
