As long as you download it from the official Avast website and not a copy site/down-loader site that most likely will download a bunch of viruses as well, its perfectly safe to use. Ive been using Avast for over 4 years with no infections. It also performs better then the basic Windows Defender that comes with Windows 10.
Avast is free, but it does come with premium subscription options like firewalls, VPN, and clean up tools that are completely optional. Avast does run 50% off sales all the time if you already have it installed, so if you like them (comes wit ha one month free trial) you can upgrade to the subscription services if you want them.
